1. Check the Care Label

Before anything else, read the care label inside your jumper. It will tell you the recommended washing temperature, cycle type, and whether machine washing is safe. Some wool or delicate jumpers may require hand washing or dry cleaning.

2. Turn the Jumper Inside Out

Turning your jumper inside out reduces friction and helps prevent pilling or damage to the outer surface.

3. Use a Laundry Bag (Optional)

Placing your jumper in a mesh laundry bag provides extra protection, especially if washing with other garments.

4. Select the Right Detergent

Use a mild detergent designed for wool or delicate fabrics. Avoid harsh detergents and fabric softeners, as they can weaken the fibres.

5. Choose a Gentle Wash Cycle

Set your washing machine to a wool, delicate, or cold wash cycle at 30°C or lower. Higher temperatures can cause shrinking, especially with wool jumpers.

6. Avoid High Spin Speeds

A gentle or low spin (around 600 RPM or lower) helps prevent stretching. Too much agitation can misshape the jumper.

7. Drying the Jumper Properly

• DO NOT tumble dry unless the care label says otherwise – heat can cause shrinkage.
• Lay the jumper flat on a clean, dry towel and reshape it while damp.
• Roll the towel with the jumper inside to gently press out excess water, then lay it flat on another dry towel to air dry.
• Avoid hanging it, as this can stretch the fabric.
